Since its inception in 1993, the Jazz Mandolin Project has always been very taper friendly. We welcome any one to come with their own gear to tape as long as none of it is on the stage or distracting the other listeners and viewers and is not used for any commercial use.
JMP is fine with photographing, with or without a flash. But not during sound check (that includes professional photographers with passes).
JMP does not allow video taping unless its been discussed with management well before hand (that's not the tour manager the day of the show). Tapes WILL be confiscated.
JMP does not allow sound board patches.
Why not?
What the taper hears in the audience is what we want them to hear, its the final presentation. What's running through the sound board is not. During a show, the sound person is reinforcing the sound that is already coming off the stage (particularly in smaller venues). Sound board levels aren't set for the purpose of a recording but rather to compensate and enhance the various stage volumes and EQ's. The mandolin is always louder in a SB tape (and often brighter and brittle) than is normal or desired, the drums are always quieter because they have so much acoustic volume, etc, etc,. Tapers often counter this statement with "Ya but I'm going to blend it with my own house mics and make it sound great". Sorry! We don't want to contribute toward tapes floating around with bad levels. The sound person has no responsibilities to the tapers other than being a good person.
